Poverty is a reality for many students and families in our school district… but unless you’ve experienced poverty, it’s difficult to truly understand.

At the Foundation, we have the privilege of raising resources for each of our 22 local public schools to help every child feel healthy, engaged, supported and challenged to meet their unique potential. We see firsthand that students living in poverty face unique constraints that can make achieving their full potential more difficult.

Are you interested in gaining a better understanding of what it might feel like to live in poverty?

Please join us for a “Poverty Simulation” on Thursday, November 7th, 6-8pm at Sehome High School.

It’s an incredibly impactful event that gives us a better understanding of the challenges people face when working and struggling to pay bills. Each attendee is assigned the role of a family member and they must navigate various challenges throughout the workshop. This eye opening event raises awareness about poverty related issues in a way that inspires compassion and community action!

Here’s what people have said about poverty simulation experiences:

I learned how hard it was to navigate the systems, but even more so, I got an emotional taste of the weight of poverty.”

“I was shocked at the hard decisions that faced me during the simulation. Having to choose between food, bills, health care seemed so unfair. It was impossible to think about school and the future while dealing with so many pressing issues.”

“When you are struggling to make ends meet, you are always in firefighting mode. It can be emotionally exhausting, and that can take away energy you need to be focused at work or in school.”
