The Bellingham Promise is our district’s integral strategic plan to empower every child to discover and develop a passion, contribute to community, and achieve a fulfilling and productive life.
The Liam Balton Memorial Fund will make it possible for teachers and staff across Bellingham public schools to apply for teacher grants intended to spark learning and inspire our students. Grants are awarded annually on a competitive basis. They may be used to further professional development and teacher learning through conference or workshop participation, enable teachers to support a more diverse range of learning styles in their classrooms or procure classroom supplies to enhance and enrich student lessons.
Liam was going into 7th grade when he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia. Despite all of his efforts, he passed away a short time after discovering his illness. In life, Liam enjoyed challenges both in and out of the classroom. He was a bright boy – memorizing the periodic table and as many digits of Pi as he could, writing stories, learning violin and guitar – and still, he spent time just thinking, wondering and imagining. Liam’s family established this fund to remember Liam and honor his character by inspiring teachers to take steps towards personal challenge and accomplishment thereby developing quality learning.
